Every rider has a story, and this September, we’re honored to spotlight Amanda Briggs as our Rider of the Month here at The Stables at Magnolia Ridge! Amanda's lifelong love for horses and her deep bond with her horse Lefty embody the heart and soul of our equestrian community.

A Lifelong Passion Begins

Amanda’s journey into the horse world began when she was just six years old. Like many of us, she was that kid who couldn’t help but point out every horse on the side of the road. She devoured horse books—especially those by Marguerite Henry—and persistently begged her parents for riding lessons. Eventually, they gave in, and the rest is history.

By the time she was twelve, Amanda had earned her first horse, Scooter, through a combination of stall-cleaning, determination, and a little parental help. Scooter lived right in Amanda’s backyard on her family’s 10-acre property, and the two became inseparable—exploring trails, visiting friends, and showing in 4-H competitions, even making it to State a couple times.  Scooter remained a cherished part of Amanda’s life until her passing at age 29.

Lefty

Amanda rode through college but took a break after graduation—returning to the saddle about five years ago with renewed passion.

Meet Lefty: A Big Heart in a Big Body

Amanda now rides Lefty, a 9-year-old Dutch Warmblood bred at Red Wagon Farm. Lefty is as curious and playful as he is people-oriented—a personality Amanda suspects stems from being bottle-raised as an orphan foal.

She’s had Lefty for just over two years, and his friendly, expressive nature continues to win her over. “He always meets me at the gate,” Amanda shares. “If I hold out his halter, he’ll put it on himself.” He also knows her voice so well that if she takes too long to come say hello, he’ll paw at his stall door to remind her—something they’re working on with patience and humor.

One of Lefty’s most charming habits? A soft, whispered whinny to greet his horse friends when he sees them across the property. It’s just one of the many things that make him special.

Growing Together

Amanda and Lefty began their partnership in a jumping program and have since transitioned into dressage training. She’s currently working with trainer Lauren, whose guidance has helped deepen Amanda’s understanding of communication and connection with her horse.

“My relationship with Lefty has really deepened this past year,” Amanda says. “Lauren has helped me improve my feel and how I communicate with him. It’s been transformational.”

While she continues to enjoy dressage, Amanda is also hoping to branch out with clinics and fun new challenges—maybe even a fox hunt someday!

Community, Care, and Connection

Amanda describes Magnolia Ridge as a second home, filled with camaraderie, support, and excellent care. “I really love the community here,” she says. “Everyone is so friendly and encouraging.” She also feels at peace knowing that Marco is looking out for Lefty’s every need. “Marco knows the horses so well—he picks up on the smallest changes. I never have to worry.”

Her favorite place at the facility? While the indoor arena is beautiful, it’s the cross-country field that holds a special place in her heart. “I love walking around outside with Lefty, taking in the beautiful views and sharing a quiet moment together.”

Words of Wisdom

One piece of advice Amanda holds dear came from a clinic with Henrik Johansen: “You can’t expect your horse to do anything you aren’t doing as a rider.” It’s a mindset shift that has deeply influenced her riding. She now checks in with herself first—whether she’s asking for more energy, relaxation, or confidence—knowing that horses reflect what we bring to them.

Trust, Time, and a Gentle Hand

Amanda believes that building trust is the cornerstone of any great horse-rider relationship. Her advice for others? Spend time just being with your horse. Grooming, observing, and listening go a long way in building the kind of trust that allows for true partnership.

Beyond the Barn

Amanda’s passion for animals doesn’t stop at horses. She once trained her dog in agility and sees strong parallels between dog training and horsemanship—especially when it comes to communication, timing, and reward. She’s also an avid reader and still gravitates toward horse stories, a nod to the spark that started it all.

As a nurse practitioner, Amanda finds the anatomical quirks of horses fascinating too. “Did you know horses have two different shaped kidneys?” she says with a laugh. “The right is heart-shaped! It’s so fun to see the unique differences across species.”

Congratulations, Amanda!

We’re so proud to have you and Lefty as part of our barn family. Your warmth, dedication, and joyful curiosity are truly inspiring—and we can’t wait to see where your next adventure takes you.

Here’s to continued growth, connection, and many more whisper-whinnies in the field.
