At The Stables at Magnolia Ridge, we’re celebrating the summer sun by spotlighting a rider whose passion, grit, and love for their horse shines as brightly as the July skies—Gage Schaefer, our July Rider of the Month!
Gage grew up in Kirkland, far away from horses. His journey into the equestrian world began about five years ago in the most 2020 way possible: during COVID. “It was one of the only things we could do since it was outside,” Gage shared. What started as a pandemic-friendly outlet quickly turned into a full-blown passion for horses, riding, and the thrill of eventing.
Meet Bailey (aka Balief MBF)
Gage’s equine partner is none other than Bailey, a 6-year-old Irish Sport Horse with a heart of gold and a flair for the dramatic. “She has the sweetest personality and will love on anyone that comes up to her,” Gage said. But don’t let her sweetness fool you—Bailey’s got a playful streak. Whether she’s tossing in some “crazy moves” over jumps or keeping rides interesting with her own flair, she’s as entertaining as she is talented.
The pair has been a team for about nine months now, and Gage’s favorite thing about Bailey? Her love for jumping. “She’s always trying to find ways to make our rides more interesting,” Gage said with a laugh.

From XC Schooling to National Placings
While they’re still building their partnership, Gage has already made great memories with Bailey—like their first cross-country outing. “She was so willing, and I had a lot of fun taking her out for the first time,” he said.
Gage’s favorite discipline is eventing, and he’s been competing for three seasons now. One of his biggest highlights? Competing at Rebecca Farm in Montana and placing 4th in Beginner Novice—an impressive accomplishment! He also earned 5th place in Area VII’s end-of-year awards for the same division. Not too shabby for someone who says “it’s all horses” when asked about other hobbies.
Goals, Growth, and Grit
Right now, Gage’s focus is on building Bailey’s confidence and preparing her for a successful show season. “I just want to get her feeling good and happy,” he said. It’s clear that for Gage, horsemanship means more than ribbons—it's about partnership and progress.
When it comes to advice, the best he's ever received is simple but powerful: don’t give up. “As long as you don’t give up, you’ll get to where you want to be,” he shared.
Where does Gage see himself in the future? He hopes to be a working student/groom or in farrier school to continue in his passion for working with horses.
Life at Magnolia Ridge
Gage credits much of his progress to the incredible team and environment at Magnolia. “The arenas are amazing, and the footing is immaculate,” he said. “Marco and his crew take such good care of our horses.” His favorite spot? The outdoor arena, hands down.
Trainer Sophie Click has played a major role in Gage’s recent growth. “Even though I haven’t been training with her long, she’s helped me so much—and I couldn’t think of anyone better to help me with Bailey.”
The Little Things Matter
Whether it’s using Cowboy Magic detangler (a tack trunk must-have!), or spending time grooming to bond with Bailey, Gage knows that the small moments are where strong partnerships are built. “Grooming is a great way to learn what your horse likes, what they don’t, and to find out what they need,” he shared.
And if Bailey could talk? “She’d probably say how pampered she is and how she’s always getting fun things,” Gage joked.
Congratulations, Gage!
We’re so proud to have Gage as part of the Magnolia Ridge family. His positive attitude, strong work ethic, and big dreams make him a true inspiration, and a rider to watch in the seasons ahead. Congratulations again, Gage!
